About Nurse Alex
My name is Alex Price. I am a registered nurse.I have always wanted to be a nurse. I am so happy to be doing my thing helping people feel good. My career has spanned 3 decades in many fields of healthcare. In the course of my career, I have served as Dietary aide,EMT, OCDT, Biomedical Technician, and now I am an RN. The role I love the most is being a nurse. It makes me happy to see someone thrive.
Let’s face it, being a caregiver is not for everyone; being a nurse is not for everyone. It’s hard, it can be gross, emotional, stressful and you name it. However, I have always been able to handle the pressure.
Believe me there are situations in life that make me melt down or even cower in frustration. But in the hospital I have always been able to keep it cool and do what needed to be done.
There are many emotional aspects to being a nurse and they can be complex; however the patient’s needs must always come first. No matter how crazy a situation may get, it does not stress me. The only thing I am thinking about is how are we going to fix what is wrong…
I consider nursing my call in life. There are many jobs that I would not be able to handle for one second, such as….. Nursing is just where God led me and it feels natural.
My first experience in healthcare was at the nursing home on N. Cassidy Ave. here in Columbus Ohio. I was 18 years old and I got a job as a dietary aide. It was a great entry point into healthcare and I felt at home right away…
While working, I went to Columbus State Community College and got my certificate to be an emergency medical technician EMT. My first stint as an EMT was at a private ambulance company called Eastside Ambulance(Hey Mac); it was right here in the inner city of Cbus; Mt. Vernon and 22nd Ave.
There, I advanced and got a position as an Ohio Certified Dialysis Technician. Working at in center hemodialysis clinics providing patients who had end stage kidney disease dialysis treatment was my job. While working in dialysis I went to College again and got a degree in an engineering field. It was my hope to be a nurse for a very long time but all of my buddies were going for engineering and I followed them.
When my Bachelors degree was completed I went into biomedical services. However, I always kept my dialysis certificate because I loved working with the patients.
After working in dialysis for many years I decided to go to Africa and open dialysis clinics there. I bought used dialysis equipment and refurbished it in my workshop at home. I shipped it all to Ghana, West Africa and opened up my clinic. My company performed over 2000 dialysis treatments in sub saharan Africa.
When my duties in Ghana were done back home it was for a venture into mental health. I worked at Twin Valley Behavioral Health in the maximum security mental hospital: Moritz. That was a challenging environment to be sure.
While working at Moritz I started working toward my long time goal of becoming a registered nurse and entered nursing school at Hocking College!!!. I thought nursing school would be easy for me since I already had so much experience.. Wrong. Nursing school was the most trying period of my life. It was hard!!!
